Update August 22 – VCBF IS SOLD OUT!
Team Nein, led by Outpost brewer Matt, pumped up the jam on their brew day! We’re talking nine pounds of raspberry jam in the kettle and another 84 pounds of tart fruity goodness in the fermenter. “Nein Witz” Raspberry Milk Stout is the latest creation to flow from the DB Family Beer Project.
Josh, Brittany, Jean, Sadie, Thomas and Raphael, along with Matt landed on a beer style in a roundabout manner. The group proposed two main concepts to start, one being a tropical fruit flavored ale and the other being a roasted malt bomb. In discussions, the team decided to incorporate elements of both – mixing the fruit notes from the ale idea with the malt driven lager suggestion.
The 7th Annual DC Beer Week officially opens on Sunday, August 9. The leading event features 20 breweries, brewery reps and unlimited drinks at the Brewers on the Block party at Suburbia. DB rep Alex will be there, so be sure to stop by and saw howdy!

“It’s just a great time to be a beer drinker in Virginia.” That’s a straight quote from pilot brewer Aaron Reilly during the 2014 Virginia Craft Brewers Fest. Agreed! And we’ll take that a step further and say right now is an especially super awesome time to be a Virginia craft beer enthusiast!
Initial ideas sometimes stick, sometimes they slide. When first concepts involve jalapeños and everyone agrees, you know the design is hot! So you will not be surprised to learn that a bunch of charred chili peppers made there way into a DB Family Brew today at Basecamp.
Team Smoking Guns leader, Outpost brewer Robbie Stone, conveyed his team’s hopes for the peppers, “we wanted to bring some heat to the beer without it being a “total scorcher”.” So they worked up a nice malt bill to back the beer and added a hop profile with characteristics of tropical fruits, pine and resin. And then yes, ingredients also included smoked jalapeños! (more…)
We caught up with Outpost brewer Chris Gregoria on his team’s family brew day at Basecamp. Chris gave us chapter and verse on Sonnet 54 which is a Saison style ale created with honey and rose hips. Chris shared that the name was selected based upon Shakespeare’s Sonnet 54 which “praises the rose for its beauty and more so for its perfume.” Bard of Avon aficionados will remember lines from the sonnet: “The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem for that sweet odour which doth in it live.”
What happens when you turn the Shakespeare verse into beer? Well, Chris, Claire and Matt of Team Lucky #7, designed their beer to have an aroma of sweet honey, delicate roses, and citrusy hops. This ale will have a slightly sweet, mildly hoppy taste that transitions to a refreshing dry finish. A crisp beer perfect for summer!
Bring it on team Lucky #7!
Three DB Family brewed beers are rocking the Brewpub taps this week. And check this out, one of them is already a winner! Team 3’s Scuttlebutt Kölsch, the first recipe brewed in our family beer project, placed 2nd at the Gordon Biersch Kölsch Cup (Jun 27). We’re also pouring Lemon-Ada, a delightful lemon wheat pale ale named after our very own Ada, you may have seen her on one of your Basecamp visits! Be sure to ask her about this beer when ya see her. And recently pilot brewer Aaron Reilly tapped our third family beer. This one’s a boozer, a delicious sit and sip kind a beer. Apple-achian Stout, made with apple butter, fresh ginger, molasses, and apple pie spice it’s like a slice of apple pie in your glass!
Kelsey and Casey at the Kolsch Cup (say that a couple times fast!) Anywhooooo, DB beer Scuttlebutt Kolsch placed 2nd at the Gordon Biersch competition last weekend and we've got it on tap now at Basecamp! This is the 1st beer brewed as part of our #DBFamily Beer project. Way to go team Strumming on the Water! 🍻
All three beers are available at Basecamp Brewpub & Meadows, so have a pint of a DB Family beer and let us know and let us know what you think.
Thanks so much to our fans for sharing their Gold Leaf Lager pictures with us! We’re digging seeing you get your adventure on and are thrilled you enjoy our delicious and refreshing Helles Lager. Cheers to you!

Another new beer getting its fermentation on right now! After much deliberation team 5, Alexis, Frank, Faye, Elizabeth L. and Seth enthusiastically agreed to go for it with their Blackberry Cream Ale.
This beer is a synthesis of ideas, flavors, attitudes and all around good fun. The team defined key components in creating the recipe. They wanted a beer that wasn’t too heavy, ideal for warmer weather drinking, easy on the ABV. Complete with blackberries, honey and floral hops, this beer is a light, sessionable drinker with a malt backbone. It’s perfect for the summer months. We know right? Sounds delicious. And we hear once fully fermented, the beer with have a purple hue!
