Our Devils Backbone family brew project is on the home stretch! Yesterday Outpost senior brewer Aaron Blumenstein and his team brewed a Kolsch-style beer with Brewmaster Jason Oliver and senior brewers Aaron Reilly and April Anderson at Basecamp Brewpub & Meadows. Aaron B., Micheal, Jason and Brittigan, from the Outpost and KB and Jen from Basecamp, pushed the envelope a bit – opting to use Willamette and Glacier hops. Yesterday’s brew marks the first time Aaron has used Glacier hops in a recipe! Jason Oliver shared that Ale of Two Cities will have the crisp, clean drinkability you’d expect from a, American Kolsch. They anticipate this brew being on the mild side and as for the Willamette and Glacier combo, well there’s the mystery! (more…)

As many of you may know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year in an effort to help raise awareness, DB senior brewer April Anderson designed a brew to help you Think Pink. April is all too familiar with the importance of supporting Breast Cancer Awareness – April’s sister was diagnosed with the disease at an early age. When creating the recipe, April had an eye toward making an invigorating beer, one to celebrate life. Pink-A-Boo Wheat is a Cran-Raspberry Ale who’s pink hue, the color associated with October-Breast Cancer Awareness Month, comes from brewing with cranberry and raspberry puree. The touch of fruity tartness makes this a refreshing and lively ale. And the name? In April’s words, “Pink-A-Boo, to help open people’s eyes to breast cancer.”
We are so excited to be a part of this year’s Fire, Flour and Fork festival in Richmond, Va. The incredible five-day food and drink experience is a fall must in the South! We are pleased to announce that Devils Backbone is featured in the Beer vs. Wine dinner at Graffiato on October 29. FFF attendees may also sample DB beers at the tasting tent on October 30 & 31. And on that Saturday, DB family member Warren will host two demos.
You’ll see Warren again in the Beer to Bun and Back session with Station 2. They’ll walk you through the spent grain process and you will sample gourmet burgs served on spent grain buns! We are also teaming up with Gelati Celesti to create beer floats. Saturday night, dress up in your best Halloween costume for the Beaux Arts Ball at The Jefferson Hotel. Devils Backbone has the honor of being the premiere beer of the night. Order your Fire, Flour & Fork tickets now and be a part of the conversation on social using #fireflourfork15.

Wow! August is flying by. The Devils Backbone team is fresh off another stellar Virginia Craft Brewers Fest. Over the weekend we camped, danced to live music, dined on great food and the beers, oh those wonderful, delicious, VA craft beers! 200+ selections brewed right here in Virginia available for sampling and 20 full pour options too! We welcomed over 60 fellow VA breweries to Basecamp Brewpub & Meadows for a weekend of all things Virginia Craft Beer. The weather was awesome, the beer was flowing.
Team Nein, led by Outpost brewer Matt, pumped up the jam on their brew day! We’re talking nine pounds of raspberry jam in the kettle and another 84 pounds of tart fruity goodness in the fermenter. “Nein Witz” Raspberry Milk Stout is the latest creation to flow from the DB Family Beer Project.
Josh, Brittany, Jean, Sadie, Thomas and Raphael, along with Matt landed on a beer style in a roundabout manner. The group proposed two main concepts to start, one being a tropical fruit flavored ale and the other being a roasted malt bomb. In discussions, the team decided to incorporate elements of both – mixing the fruit notes from the ale idea with the malt driven lager suggestion.
The 7th Annual DC Beer Week officially opens on Sunday, August 9. The leading event features 20 breweries, brewery reps and unlimited drinks at the Brewers on the Block party at Suburbia. We’ll kickoff our DB Beer Week here, pouring Cran Gose, a sour beer brewed with cranberries, and Striped Bass Pale Ale, a year-round canned offering. DB rep Alex will be there, so be sure to stop by and saw howdy!
Now, where can you find DB beers during the week? Here’s the full run down.

DB Brewmaster Jason Oliver dug deep in his catalogue and rolled out rarities for the Jack Rose event. Jason even created a barrel-aged sour that was aged on a Jack Rose Willet Barrel! Other specialty offerings include Cuvee du Gooch – which Jason created by blending several brews from the DB vault and fermenting with Brettanomyces. The full tap list offers you a chance to try upwards of 20 DB beers, most not found in package!
The next evening on the 13th, we head to Maddy’s Bar and Grille where you will find Turbo Cougar and a pin of our Teddy Bear, which is an extra special rendition of our Vienna Lager – fermented with cocoa nibs, vanilla beans and cinnamon!

“It’s just a great time to be a beer drinker in Virginia.” That’s a straight quote from pilot brewer Aaron Reilly during the 2014 Virginia Craft Brewers Fest. Agreed! And we’ll take that a step further and say right now is an especially super awesome time to be a Virginia craft beer enthusiast!
