Devils Backbone Announces The Heartland Initiative and Heartland Series
LEXINGTON, VA – Devils Backbone Brewing Company’s mission to enrich our community has taken a big step forward in 2017 with the Heartland Initiative – a new comprehensive program that serves as an opportunity for the company to further aid our diversifying and expanding community through philanthropy, partnerships, and sustainability efforts. The Heartland Initiative focuses on five core pillars of work that represent a community group that is near and dear to Devils Backbone: Neighbors, Industry, Family, Environment, and Operations. It is our hope that by focusing our efforts, we increase our ability to make a greater and more sustainable impact across the Virginia Heartland.
“We are stewards on our farm and have channeled our standards throughout Devils Backbone as a community-centered, environmentally friendly business since 2008,” say Founders Steve & Heidi Crandall. “The Heartland Initiative is an exciting opportunity with a new full time dedicated employee to further our mission and continue support for our Virginia community in impactful and sustainable ways.”
The first major project of the Heartland Initiative at the beginning of the year was the creation of a quarterly beer release called the Heartland Series. The Heartland Series beers come from the minds and the hearts of the Devils Backbone family. Family members are invited to share their ideas for each brew’s name, style, and ingredients, plus an organization dear to them that the beer will honor. Devils Backbone will donate 50% of all sales of the beer to the selected organization, and this draft-only release will be exclusively available at the Outpost Tap Room and Basecamp Brewpub.
The first Heartland Series beer is called One Foot in the Black (ABV 7%, IBU 49), a smoked black IPA created by Basecamp brewer Erik Filep to benefit the Wildland Firefighter Foundation. In addition to being a brewer. Erik is also a wildland firefighter and the name of this beer references the safest place for firefighters to be while they are battling the flames – the burned area known as “the black.” This beer will be available during the month of May.
The second Heartland Series release was pitched by Julianne Gunst, the Devils Backbone HR generalist, called Survivors Double IPA to benefit Free to Breathe, whose vision is to double lung cancer survival by 2022. Julianne’s uncle was a 30+ year employee at Anheuser-Busch who sadly lost his life to lung cancer in 2009, and her family has been advocating for increased awareness ever since. This beer will be brewed in May and available at the Basecamp Brewpub and Outpost Tap Room beginning in June.
Devils Backbone beers are inspired by the great brewing traditions of Europe and the ingenuity of modern craft brewing. Devils Backbone has earned numerous accolades for its beers, excelling in the art of lager brewing in an ale dominated industry. The brewing team has received awards from the World Beer Cup, Australian International Beer Awards, Virginia Craft Brewers Fest, and the Great American Beer Festival® including national titles for GABF 2014 Mid-Sized Brewing Company and Brew Team of the Year, 2013 Small Brewing Company and Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year and 2012 Small Brewpub and Small Brewpub Brewer of the Year.
Devils Backbone operates two breweries in central Virginia: Basecamp Brewpub & Meadows (200 Mosbys Run, Roseland, VA) the original brewery, restaurant and outdoor beer and dining area, located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in scenic Nelson County; and the Outpost Brewery & Tap Room, a state-of-the-art production brewery and tap room (50 North Wind Lane, Lexington, VA).
In 2008, founders Steve Crandall and his wife Heidi, inspired by a skiing trip where they had their first taste of German beer, opened the doors to Devils Backbone Brewing Company in the heartland of Virginia. Basecamp Brewpub was an instant regional success and with so many beer lovers asking where they could purchase the brews, they broke ground on the Outpost in 2011. Anticipated to produce 10,000 barrels of beer in the first ten years of operation, the Outpost reached 45,000 barrels in the first three years and recently completed an additional expansion to reach 250,000 barrels.
